ASHLAND, Ky. - The funeral for former state Sen. George D. Conley, a longtime referee for collegiate and professional basketball, will be today.
Conley, 66, died Wednesday at his Ashland home. He had been suffering from heart problems.
He was elected in 1959 to a four-year term representing Boyd, Lawrence and Johnson counties. He was unsuccessful in later races for state senator and state treasurer.
Conley was a college referee from the 1950s to the mid-1970s and later refereed in the American Basketball Association for about two years.
He was a Southeastern Conference official for much of his career and also was a referee at games in the Ohio Valley, Atlantic Coast and Southern conferences. He was the father of Larry Conley, a standout basketball player at the University of Kentucky who is now a broadcaster for ESPN.
Conley, a Paintsville native, was a teacher and basketball coach at Ashland High School from 1949 to 1954.
Besides his son Larry, of Atlanta, Conley is survived by his wife, Wanda Manley Conley; three daughters, Linda Mayers and Jennifer Gray, both of Ashland and Pam Layan of Okeechobee, Fla.; another son, Joe Conley of Deltona, Fla.; a sister; and 10 grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland.
