Ex-SEC Official Charlie Vacca Dies
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Former Southeastern Conference basketball official Charlie Vacca, who played at the University of south Carolina in 1968 and 1969, has died of a heart attack. He was 46.
Vacca officiated SEC games in the 1980s but quit in 1988 after a bout with Hodgkin's disease.
In 1985 he officiated the NCAA tourney semifinal game in Lexington, Ky., between Georgetown and St. John's.
He officiated Atlantic Coast Conference games before his work in the SEC.
Vacca had lived in Nashville until 1993, when he moved to Boca Raton, Fla. He died last weekend while visiting his two sons in Summerville.
Private memorial services are scheduled for Wednesday.
