Kentucky Wildcats Top St. John's, 73 To 59
MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, N.Y., Dec. 29 - Coach Adolph Rupp's "Little Mountain Boys" from the hills of Kentucky put on a great exhibition of basketball for the city folks here tonight to trounce the St. John's quintet 73 to 59. But the final score was not indicative of the game for despite the fine playing by the Wildcats, it was a close battle until the final five minutes of play when the Ruppmen pulled away for a substantial lead.
Even with their squirrel-rifle marksmanship, the Kentuckians were hard-pressed to keep in front of the Brooklynites, principally because they were unable to keep their towering center, Harry Boykoff, from tossing them through the netting. Boykoff rang up 12 field goals and three free throws for a total of 27 points.
It fell to a lot of good old Wilbur Schu, who went into the game as a substitute forward after 10 minutes of play to take scoring honors for the Cats. Shoo-Schoo Schu was in top form tonight and rang the gong for six fielders and six charity tosses out of six attempts for a total of 18 points.
Campbell Comes Through
But Schu wasn't the only substitute who came out from under the bushel tonight. When Wallace (Wah Wah) Jones collected four personal fouls before 10 minutes of play had elapsed. Dutch Campbell, last year's all-conference center, was sent into the battle and the lanky Kentuckian showed the boys he hadn't forgotten how to hit by accounting for 11 points.
Campbell, however, was three points under Capt. Jack Parkinson for runner-up honors in the Wildcat scoring column. The St. John's boys left Jack open far out on the floor on several occasions and the Kentucky leader pushed through his favorite shot to account for a total of 14 points.
The high-scoring Wildcats, however, were not the only stars on the Rupp aggregation for each of the seven men who took part in the ball game put out everything he had to ring up the seventh straight victory for the blue and white.
All Cats Do Well
Jack Tingle played a scorching good game, both offensively and defensively while accounting for 12 points. Rapid Ralph Beard was up to his same old tricks of stealing the ball, dribbling down the court and either scoring or passing to another Kentucky player for a marker. Wah Wah put up a great defensive game during his short stay in the first part of the encounter and when he returned to play in the final stages, and Boykoff had a tough time of it while Jones was around. Joe Holland, too, did his part in the first half.
The St. John's boys marked in the scoring column first when Ray Wertis was fouled by Holland and made good the gratis shot to put the Redmen in front by one point. Then Wah Wah put on an exhibition of twisting and looped a one-handed through to give the Wildcats the lead.
Max Zaslofsky retaliated with a tip-in shot to take the lead back for St. John's, but that was the last point for the Indians until Beard, Parkinson and Holland had run the count to 8-3, for the Kentuckians as the first five minutes of playing time ran out.
During the next five minutes of play the two teams broke even in the scoring, each accounting for nine points to put the totals at 17 and 12 with the Wildcats on top.
Redmen Take Lead
But at this point the St. John's quintet put on a rally and cut the Kentucky lead to one point at 24-23 with five minutes remaining in the first half. Then Big Boy Boykoff sank a one-handed crip shot to give the Redmen a one-point advantage, but Campbell evened the count with a free throw after having been fouled by the big center.
A tip-in by Boykoff put the advantage back in the hands of the New Yorkers, but not for long. Fielders by Campbell, Tingle and Schu pushed the Cats in front again with a 31-27 lead.
A long one from the side by Baer and a one-handed by Frascella knotted the count again, but before the half-time rest period Campbell accounted for a fielder and Schu got two gratis shots while the Indians were held scoreless and the first half ended with the Rupp-men on top, 35-31.
It was a close ball game throughout most of the second half too, but St. John's was never able to get back in the lead although it did manage to come within one point of the Kentuckians.
Cats Pull Ahead
At the end of the first five minutes of play, in the second period the tally stood at 46-41, and mid-way of the half the Wildcats had only a three-point lead at 51-48. With only five minutes of playing time remaining things still were tough, although the Kentucky quintet had increased its advantage to seven points at 62-55.
Here, however, the cats took on new life and sailed out to sea with banners flying. Tingle made good a gratis throw, Captain Parkinson hit a crip and a free throw, and Schu dropped through a one-hander to run the count to 63-55.
The Redmen returned to the scoring column with a crip shot by Jacobson, a substitute guard, and then Boykoff tossed through a long one from near the center of the court to complete the scoring for St. John's.
But the Kentuckians hadn't quit for the night. Campbell tossed in a free one after being fouled under the basket and Schu swished one through the net from the corner. Tingle singed the Ruppmen off for the evening with a tip-in just before the final whistle sounded.
