REMY MEYER, REFEREE, DIES IN HINSDALE
Funeral arrangements for Robert E. (Remy) Meyer, former Big Ten football and basketball official who died Monday night, were pending yesterday.
Meyer, 51, University of Chicago sports great, died at the Hinsdale Sanitarium and Hospital. He was general marketing manager for the Illinois Bell Telephone company.
A 1939 graduate of the University of Chicago, Meyer was among the Midway's all-time, all-around sports stars. He won nine letters in football, basketball, and baseball and has the distinction of scoring the last touchdown for Chicago before the school gave up football.
He officiated at Big Ten football games during the last 21 years, including the 1962 Rose Bowl game between Minnesota and U.C.L.A. He was a basketball referee for 22 years until giving it up several years ago.
Meyer played one year of professional baseball and coached basketball for two years at Illinois Institute of Technology before entering the Navy in 1942, where he served as an officer in the Pacific during World War II.
A resident of Hinsdale, Meyer was active in boy scouting and the Chicago Crusade of mercy. he is survived by his wife and three children.
