Obituary - Fort Worth Star-Telegram (August 11, 2005)
FORT WORTH - Joe L. Shosid, 77, a retired U.S. Air Force major general, died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005, at his home.
Funeral: 10 a.m. Thursday at University Christian Church, with Dr. Alan Lobaugh, the Rev. Katie Alexander and the Honorable Jim Wright officiating. Entombment: Greenwood Mausoleum, with military honors.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Western Hills High School, Attention: Elizabeth Johnson, 3600 Boston Ave., Fort Worth, Texas 76116, for the Maj. Gen. Joseph L. Shosid Scholarship for the benefit of Junior Air Force ROTC students.
Honorary pallbearers: James A. McMullen III, Speaker Jim Wright, Jack Vestal, Ross Bailey, Larry Wenzel and Marshall Lynam.
Joe was a native of Fort Worth, where he attended public schools, graduating from Paschal High School and receiving a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and master of arts degree in government, both from Texas Christian University.
He served as special assistant to former U.S. House Speaker Jim Wright, beginning with his initial election, and in addition was a special assistant to Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey from 1966 to 1969. Speaker Wright asked to remember Joe by this statement: "Joe Shosid was my loyal friend and trusted advisor for very near to 50 years. He was an active and ever loyal workman to the vineyards of Fort Worth's progress, an enthusiastic promoter of our community's prosperity by word and deed. Joe was throughout his life more than a resident, he was a full-time citizen."
He was president of Shosid and Associates, an international firm with offices in Fort Worth and Washington, D.C.; owner and president of Advertising Unlimited, a Fort Worth advertising and public relations firm; an associate of Jim McMullen Public
Relations Agency; a sportswriter for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram; and assistant sports editor for the Fort Worth Press.
He originally enlisted in the U.S. Maritime Service and later the U.S. Army and transferred to the U.S. Air Force Reserve, rising to the rank of major general.
His military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Air Force Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation Emblem, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Overseas Ribbon, Air Force Longevity
Service Award Ribbon with one silver and two bronze oak leaf clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with two hour glass devices and the Army Service Ribbon.
He was awarded the Air Force's highest civilian honor, the Exceptional Service Award, in 1975, and also was the recipient of the Air Force Association's National Man of the Year Award as well as the Exceptional Service Plaque and Medal of Merit.
He served as a football and basketball official for 42 years, having served also as a supervisor of officials of the Metropolitan Collegiate Athletic Conference and as president of the Southwest Basketball Officials Association.
He was a member of Julian Feild Masonic Lodge, a 32nd degree Mason, charter member of the Fort Worth Scottish Rite, Moslah Shrine Temple, Congressional Staff Club, Ridglea Country Club of Fort Worth, Carswell and Bolling Air Force Base Officers Clubs and other civic, fraternal and social organizations.
He was a member of University Christian Church of Fort Worth.
Survivors: Children, a daughter, Sharon DuLany, and son, Steven Shosid and wife, Patti; grandson, Richard DuLany, and sister, Clara A. Sankary, all who reside in Fort Worth.
