And Edgar McNabb
Edgar McNabb, who refereed 10 high school state basketball tournaments and has been a timer in recent years at the schoolboy show, died Tuesday night. He conducted rules clinics for the Kentucky High School Athletic Association and also officiated in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Edgar was one of a handful of people who met at old University High in Lexington in 1958 to plan the campaign that led to Kentucky adopting a playoff system in football. He was a coach and later superintendent at Beechwood. His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home in Erlanger.

Mr. Beechwood is dead. W. Edgar McNabb, veteran coach, athletic director, superintendent and educator at the Ft. Mitchell school for three decades, died Tuesday night at his home.
McNabb's coaching career dates back to 1931 after his graduation from Morehead State Teachers College. That same year he took over the coaching duties for football and basketball at Raceland High School.
After a seven-year stint at Raceland, "Mac" came to northern Kentucky, serving six years as Bellevue High coach, switched to Ludlow and then assumed the Beechwood post in 1944.
There was no football at Beechwood then. Later "Mac" did it all for the Beechies and wound up as the school's superintendent.
McNabb was a veteran football and basketball official, serving as rules clinic director for the Kentucky High School Athletic Assn. No stranger to the state high school basketball tournament, he served many years as official timer and officiated in the "Sweet Sixteen" numerous times.
"Mac" was also board chairman of the old Moonlight Garden Alumni Club, a group of high school coaches who chaperoned the many young people who attended the Coney Island dance pavilion.
After retirement two years ago, McNabb took a post with the Northern Kentucky University, supervisor of practicum experiences. He also was an avid golfer and played weekly at Ft. Mitchell Country Club.
When "Mac" took over at Beechwood during World War II, he was reminded that the Ft. Mitchell school was small and its personnel limited. His only comment: "There is a lot more in high school sports than just winning games."
