Wildcats Trip a Team of Terrified Tigers:
The Cats bashed the visiting Tigers 98-64 before 23,805 fans at Rupp Arena, raising their overall record to 7-2 (with the Tigers falling to 7-3).
It wasn't easy all that easy in the 1st half. The Cats jumped out to an early 7-0 lead (at that point, the 1st TV timeout was taken, and Auburn had not yet scored) thanks to tip-in baskets by Pope, a layup by McCarty, and a Prickett FT (Pope and Prickett started the game in place of Rhodes and Riddick, with Sheppard remaining as point guard). A Brooks dunk finally broke the ice for the Tigers, but soon the Cats were up 23-13 as Rhodes entered at the 5 minute mark of the half (he missed his 1st shot but hit a 3 on his second). Kentucky was aided in this effort by a technical foul called on Chris Davis, who protested his foul against McCarty on a rebound. More 3s by Delk and Rhodes fell as UK built a 40-28 lead, but the Cats shot poorly overall from 3 point range (beginning with only 3-16 shooting). Rhodes scored the last 8 points for UK (adding FTs and a putback basket) to give the Cats a 45-32 halftime lead.
Costner started the scoring in the 2nd half for the Tigers, but UK maintained an 8-10 point lead, until with about 16 minutes left in the game, Pope had a putback bucket, Walker hit a 3, and Delk managed a 12 footer to push the lead to 68-47. The Cats cruised from there. Consistency in calling fouls was apparently lacking - Rhodes was knocked down at one point, yet he was called for fouling Davis. The Cats went on a 13-4 run followed by an 11-4 run to build its ultimate large margin, during which it was apparent that the Auburn players were tired. The last UK score was delivered by Padgett on a 3 to make the final margin 98-64.
