Wildcats Trim St. John's, 44-38, in Garden
NEW YORK, Dec. 30 (AP) - The University of Kentucky racked up the second victory of its eastern basketball tour and handed St. John's its first setback of the season tonight by nosing out the New Yorkers, 44-38, in the second game of the double-header at Madison Square Garden.
The largest crowd of the metropolitan season, 18,179, saw the Wildcats complete a sweep of the night's bill by visiting fives, unbeaten DePaul of Chicago having overpowered Long Island, 59-38, in the opener.
Led by two of their rangy boys, Jack Tingle and Bob Brannum, the Wildcats jumped into an early lead and never were headed. They left the floor at the half on the long end of a 22-17 count and widened that margin by one-point in a nip-and-tuck final session. Brannum, although missing almost 10 minutes of the second half, paced the winners with 12 points, eight of which came on goals shot out of the pivot spot. Dick McGuire tallied 16 for the losers to be top scorer.
Hold Lead Throughout
The Kentuckians, losers of only one game this season and that by a two-point margin to Illinois, held command throughout although the Indians from Brooklyn never were farther behind than 10 points. Jack Tingle, who counted 10 points for the Wildcats, sent the visitors on their way with a free throw after two minutes of play. Brannum quickly added the first of his 12 markers and Ray Wertis tied it with a field goal for St. John's.
Tom Moseley joined Tingle and Brannum in a scoring parade that shot Kentucky into a 12-7 lead at the 10-minute mark. The Wildcats threw up a defense that kept the locals away from the basket while Tingle and Brannum did fine work off the backboards.
After Kentucky had built its margin to 18-12, St. John's rallied to pull within one point with a minute to play in the first half, but little Hy Gotkin, only Indian veteran, made a wild heave at the goal and Kentucky cashed in quickly as Brannum hooked one in from the pivot. Then Wilbur Schu made good on two free shots with seconds remaining to send the Wildcats off the floor with their 22-17 lead.
Keep Flying High
Continuing the fast pace, the Wildcats galloped off to a 25-21 in the first five minutes of the second half while holding St. John's to a single field goal.
They increased the advantage to 10 points but St. John's cut it in half with 10 minutes remaining in the game. With Brannum on the bench via four personal fouls, Kentucky rolled again, and with five minutes left widened the gap to nine points, 42-33.
The last five minutes were a wild scramble with McGuire and Wertis rallying the locals, but after seeing the lead cut to four points. Truitt DeMoisey, replacement for Brannum, got past the St. John's wide-open defense to tally the final goal.
