Poche Funeral Will Be Today
Was One of Founders of Mid-Winter Sports
Funeral services for Irwin Felix Poche Sr., one of the 39 founding members of the Mid-Winter Sports Association who was president of the Sugar Bowl organization from 1952 to 1954, will be conducted Monday at 9 a.m. from the McMahon-Coburn-Briede Funeral Home, 600 Moss St.
Religious rites will follow with a Requiem Mass at St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church, 5500 Paris Ave., with interment in St. Louis No. 1 Cemetery.
Mr. Poche died Saturday at 6 p.m. in Touro Infirmary after suffering an apparent stroke earlier in the day. He was 74.
A native of St. James La., Mr. Poche moved to New Orleans when he was a youth and was graduated from Boys' High (now Warren Easton). Later he attended Jefferson College and Harvard University.
Close to athletics all his life, Mr. Poche was a sports writer before becoming recreational director of public playgrounds in the city.
He was active in New Orleans for many years as a public relations director for the Orleans Levee Board. Mr. Poche was one of the organizers of the Poche Theatre (now the Civic Theatre) and a promoter and editor.
Mr. Poche was a member of International House, the Chamber of Commerce of the New Orleans Area, and the New Orleans Athletic Club, an organization he served as athletic and promotive director.
He was also managing director of the NOAC and was editor of the club's magazine, "The Punch."
He was a member and officer in many other civic business, professional and sports organizations and at the time of his death was chairman of the States-Item's Children's Football Fund and chairman of the pageant committee of the Sugar Bowl.
Mr. Poche is survived by his widow, the former Helen Thiele; one son, Irwin F. Poche Jr.; a brother, Whitney Poche, and three grandchildren.
