Obituary - Anchorage (AK) Daily News (November 12, 1996)
Gary A. Holtz
Local basketball referee Gary Allen Holtz, 55, died of a heart attack Nov. 9, 1996, at Columbia Alaska Regional Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon today at Saint Anthony's Catholic Church, 825 S. Klevin, with the Rev. Leo Walsh officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service, beginning at 11 a.m. Pallbearers will include Bill Palmer, Larry Hatfield, Al Hull, Bob Stuvek, David Mitchell and Dave Carpenter.
A memorial service was held Monday at American Legion Post #29. Another service and burial with military honors will take place in San Angelo, Texas, later this week.
Mr. Holtz was born Sept. 20, 1941, at West Union, W.V.
In 1959, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and in 1966 was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base. He remained in Anchorage after his retirement from the military in 1979.
A member of Saint Anthony's Catholic Church, Mr. Holtz was also a member of American Legion Post #29 and had recently become a member of the Moose Lodge. He was a salesman for Builders Millwork and Supply for two years.
His family said, "Gary was a sports enthusiast and coached several softball teams, including The Bandits, who went to the national tournament. He also coached junior varsity football and basketball teams at East Anchorage High School. Extremely active in the basketball community, he was the only referee to officiate the Great Alaska Shootout every year since the annual tournament began."
"The day before he passed away, Gary was presented a basketball that was signed by the men's UAA basketball team, in honor of his many years of service to the UAA basketball program. The ball was a special gift and meant a lot to him. He was also touched by the outpouring of support by his friends and the community. It was of comfort for him to know so many people cared."
Mr. Holtz is survived by his wife of 30 years, Ninfa of Anchorage; sons Kevin and Eric, also of Anchorage and many special friends in the sports and military communities.
The family suggests that any flowers ordered for Mr. Holtz's services be sent to Johnson's Funeral Home, San Angelo, Texas.
Local arrangements were by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
