Rematch of Wildcats versus Wildcats:
Arizona
defeated
Kentucky
89-74
in
the
2nd
round
of
the
Maui
Classic.
UA
was
ranked
#1
in
the
nation,
Kentucky
#8
when
this
game
was
played.
It
was
the
1st
loss
of
the
season
for
the
(true)
Wildcats.
UK
could
hardly
have
had
a
worse
1st
quarter.
They
had
difficulties
inbounding,
allowing
Arizona
several
easy
steals
and
layups.
The
steals
persisted
as
Kentucky
tried
and
failed
on
a
handful
of
occasions
to
bring
the
ball
across
midcourt
before
Arizona
had
grabbed
it
and
scored.
Bad
rebounding
enabled
the
pseudo-Wildcats
to
take
more
shots
under
the
basket
than
they
should
have
had,
and
Kentucky's
shooting
was
so
bad
(only
1
3
pointer
in
the
1st
half,
and
ice-cold
FG
shooting)
that
they
could
mount
no
serious
challenge
to
Arizona.
Davison
of
UA
scored
on
an
opening
dunk
off
a
lob,
but
Padgett
hit
a
pair
of
FTs
to
tie
it
at
2-2.
Edgerson
had
a
layup,
but
Sheppard
countered
with
a
layup
of
his
own.
Bibby
got
a
dunk
off
a
Turner
turnover,
then
Edgerson
hit
a
FT
to
make
it
7-4
UA.
Bibby
hit
a
15
footer,
then
Simon
nailed
a
3,
then
Bibby
had
a
steal
and
dunk,
forcing
a
Kentucky
timeout
as
UA
led
14-4.
Simon
had
2
early
fouls
(the
1st
of
which
was
dubious),
and
on
his
2nd
he
complained
and
grimaced
to
the
ref,
who
then
hit
him
with
a
technical
foul
(his
3rd).
Mills
hit
both
FTs,
but
Padgett
missed
on
UK's
possession,
and
Bramlett
got
a
layup.
Terry
hit
a
high
bank
to
go
up
18-8,
then
Edwards
tipped
in
a
Sheppard
miss
to
make
it
18-10.
Terry
hit
a
long
3,
Edwards
was
fouled
on
a
3
and
hit
only
1
(his
1st
2
tries
were
terrible)
to
make
it
21-11
Arizona.
Bibby
nailed
2
3s,
sandwiching
a
Mohammed
dunk
off
an
Evans
pass.
Sheppard
and
Bibby
both
missed
shots
as
the
1st
quarter
ended
at
27-13.
Kentucky
had
managed
7
turnovers
in
the
opening
quarter,
and
hit
on
only
3
of
13
FGs.
Bibby
had
12
pts
by
the
end
of
the
1st
quarter.
A
couple
of
sloppy
possessions
led
off
the
2nd
quarter,
and
UK
had
trouble
bringing
the
ball
up
(the
guards
did
not
work
together
to
offset
the
Arizona
press).
Dickerson
finally
hit
a
FT.
Bibby
hit
yet
another
3
to
go
up
31-13.
After
2
Bibby
misses,
Sheppard
finally
hit
a
19
footer
to
make
it
31-15
Arizona.
Bibby
missed
another
3,
but
his
shot
was
tipped
in,
then
he
got
a
steal
and
fed
Dickerson
for
a
layup
to
make
it
35-15.
Evans
made
a
layup
but
missed
a
foul
shot,
then
Magloire
put
back
an
Evans
miss
to
make
it
UA
35-19.
Arizona
missed
on
its
next
3
possessions,
as
did
UK,
but
Mohammed
eventually
putback
an
awful
Edwards
shot
to
close
to
35-21
UA.
Edgerson
got
the
FTs
back
on
a
Padgett
foul
underneath
(again,
horrendous
Kentucky
rebounding
allowed
this).
Edwards
finally
hit
Kentucky's
1st
3
with
only
a
few
minutes
left
in
the
2nd
quarter,
and
Dickerson
again
was
fouled
and
made
both
FT
tosses
to
go
up
39-24.
Both
sides
traded
pairs
of
FTs.
Mohammed
hit
a
pair
of
singularly
beautiful
FT
shots
(considering
how
badly
he
often
does)
to
close
to
UA
40-26,
but
Dickerson
answered
with
a
very
difficult
(and
heavily
guarded)
16
footer
to
make
it
42-26.
Padgett
hit
an
18
footer
to
end
1st
half
scoring,
and
Arizona
led
42-28.
The 2nd half was more of the same, although an Evans layup allowed UK to close to within 48-37, but that was as close as the Cats got. With a little over 5 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter, UA led 52-27 and seemed to be out of danger. The lead grew to 60-41 with a few minutes left in the 3rd. Kentucky's 4th quarter rally was similarly snuffed, with the Cats closing to within 12 pts before finally losing by 15 at 89-74.
