Cumberland Beats 'Cats
Haydon Scores 13 of Kentucky's 21 Points
WILLIAMSBURG, Ky., Feb. 26 -- The University of Kentucky basketball ship came to grief on Williamsburg rocks tonight, meeting defeat at the hands of Cumberland College, 30 to 21, in the first game of their Southern trip. The Cumberland quintet is one of the strongest ever turned out and it was no surprise to the local townsmen that the Lexington men failed to walk away with the honors.
The local gymnasium is smaller than the ones in which visitors have been accustomed to play and their passwork and goal tossing was hampered.
Haydon, left behind Wednesday because of faculty action, made a late start Thursday morning, after having arranged things satisfactorily, and arrived in time to save the Wildcats from an even worse fate. He accounted for 13 of the University points.
Adkins, of the locals was injured, but continued in the lineup after a short rest.

CUMBERLAND COLLEGE BEATS KENTUCKY STATE
Williamsburg, Ky., Feb. 26. - The Cumberland College five defeated the Kentucky State quintet here tonight 30 to 21 in the best game of basketball ever staged on the local court.
The first period was a nip and tuck affair with the locals gaining the decision by a close margin and the long end of a 14 to 12 count. The Cumberland lads managed to maintain their lead through the second period only by the hardest kind of playing.
A. Siler and Atkin led the attack for the locals with every member of the quintet playing a brilliant game with team work predominating at all times. Hayden, at forward for the "Wildcats" led in scoring with 13 markers to his credit.

MOUNTAINEERS OF CUMBERLAND COLLEGE
The following is taken fro the columns of the Whitley Republican:
There was a hot time in the old town last Thursday night when the Mountaineer squad of basketballers ploughed roughshod over the University of Kentucky Wildcats. The game was fast and interesting despite the indications of the 30 to 21 score. The Cumberland boys took the lead in the very beginning of the game and threw three field goals in such rapid succession that the University boys recovered from the shock with difficulty. Kentucky, however, soon came to the realization that there was strong and mighty opposition to be met and then began their part of the scoring. During the later part of the first half the game was nip and tuck and the period ended with the 14 to 12 score in favor of the local boys.
In the second half Kentucky came back stronger and determined to win. They took the lead and held it for a few minutes and it began to look bad for Cumberland. But after holding a little conference among themselves the teams resumed play and commenced to fight an old time form. Cumberland soon tied the score and then forged ahead until the game was no longer in doubt in winning this contest the local team holds a good position claim or contend for the basket ball title of Kentucky.
The Wildcats have defeated Georgetown, Wesleyan, Maryville, and several other college teams of note. Besides this, the Kentucky played the University of Tennessee five, one of the strongest basketball aggregations in the entire South, on the night after they were beaten by Cumberland and Tennessee won by a less margin than Cumberland. Therefore dope has it that Cumberland is better than Tennessee this year by several points. Tennessee and Centre College also have refused to meet the Mountaineers of Cumberland, but it is easy to see that the title of Kentucky cannot be consistently claimed until the Cumberland College team is defeated.
This year's team is in all probability the strongest that ever represented Cumberland in an athletic contest and it is to be regretted that two of the members will graduate this year. However, with the other members available and an abundance of material developing the team ought to come back just as strong next year and plan for a prominent place in the athletics of Kentucky.
The above picture of the squad is an exact reproduction of the one which appeared on the sport page of the Louisville Herald in January. The sporting editor, Mr. Bruce Dudley, kindly consented to it use in this article.
