Obituary - Billings Gazette (December 29, 1988)
Rev. Robert H. Moorman
The Rev. Robert Henry "Bob" Moorman served as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Billings for 22 years. He had served on the board of trustees of Billings Deaconess Hospital, was a member of the board and former president of the Yellowstone Tuberculosis Association, served on the board of trustees of the Billings Polytechnic Institute and on the committee that worked out the details for Rocky Mountain College.
He attended the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and Newton Theological Seminary, now Andrew Newton. While in Louisville he also coached football and basketball.
He came from the seminary to Casper, Wyo., then served pastorates in Paris, Mo.; Cheyenne, Wyo.; Boise, Idaho; and South Gate, Calif. In 1962, he retired from pastorate and settled in Billings.
He was active in Baptist Denominational affairs, served as president of the Kansas Baptist Convention and was president of the Montana Baptist Convention. He was elected to the board of manager of the American Baptist Home Mission Society. Linfield College of McMinnville, Ore., conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Divinity, and his alma mater presented him with a Citation of Achievement.
He carried on a children's organization called The Pals of the Pastor. In 1964, the church in Billings elected him pastor emeritus.
Rev. Moorman, 98, died Wednesday in Western Manor Nursing Home where he had lived since 1985.
He was born on a farm in Caldwell County, Mo., and graduated from William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. While in college he was an outstanding athlete.
On Dec. 18, 1956, he married LaVera B. Lawless in Billings.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert H. Jr. of Citrus Heights Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Jane Noonan of Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the First Baptist Church with burial in Mountview Cemetery. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge.
